Massimiliano Gioni has a new job — or at least a brand new title. New Museum director Lisa Phillips announced this afternoon that the New York-based curator and critic, who has served as the institution’s associate director and director of exhibitions for the past seven years, has been promoted to artistic director.
During his tenure at the New Museum, Gioni has certainly left his mark, not just on the museum’s program but on the entire New York art world, organizing shows such as “Carsten Höller: Experience,” “NYC 1993: Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star,” “Ghosts in the Machine,” and its first Triennial “Younger Than Jesus.” This past year’s Ragnar Kjartansson exhibition, for which he was also responsible, was widely covered — especially the show’s performance programming — and considered a highlight of the spring art calendar. Gioni was also the curator of 2013’s 55th Venice Biennale, titled and themed “Il Palazzo Enciclopedico/The Encyclopedic Palace.”
“In his new position as Artistic Director, Massimiliano will take an even more active role working with me to envision and plan the next phase of our institution’s growth,” said Phillips in the museum’s press release. She went on to say, “We are not a typical museum. Nor is Artistic Director a typical museum title. But it accurately reflects the expansiveness of Massimiliano’s vision and the wide spectrum of activities it contains.”
